So I want to try making some training pants using the patterns I found in this forum. I want something reasonably water proof but I don't want to get super complicated with layering fabrics since I've never sewn before in my life. What would you recommend?

I have zero talent at sewing and I'd never even think of trying this myself but from what I understand you want a PUL fabric for the outer layer which is kinda plastic like on one side and cloth ish on the other (to contain the wetness) and then an absorbent layer material. I know cloth diapers are make with Birdseye, Gauze. and Flannel depending on your preference so I imagine any of those would work for the absorbent layer.
