I'm in Southern California and never hear about events for DD/lg or anything like that.
So my question is, are there any events out here?

A bit of an old post but yes! Or at least I know of a few in LA county, good groups too. A big one to look into would be SOAP or Social of Age Players. They do both play parties and munches.
